Building Winning Coalitions

What the right learned about organizing from Obama - and we mostly forgot

The Problem. Democrats are skilled at mobilizing, filling the streets, raising money, generating energy. They have underinvested in organizing relative to mobilizing. Mobilizing gets people to do a thing once. Organizing builds the kind of people who show up repeatedly, without being told, because they belong to something.

Analysis. In 2024, the Harris campaign spent $2.9 billion and made 300 million phone calls. Three percent of these efforts reached a voter. In contrast, Republicans spent $1.8 billion and won, in large part through relationships built in churches, community groups, and local chapters that operated year-round. The right’s infrastructure is not built on rallies. It is built on belonging.

The Approach. A small number of Democratic-aligned organizations such as Down Home North Carolina, ISAIAH in Minnesota, Hoosier Action in Indiana have built durable, winning coalitions using methods that are documented and replicable. The six blueprints below reflect those methods, each with a track record of results.

Note: our approach is largely based on the article written by Charles Duhigg in the New Yorker. February 2, 2026.

Coalition Building Strategies

Relational Organizing

Decentralized / Franchise Leadership

Relational Organizing

Messages from people you know produce an 8.3 to 17 percent turnout lift. Mass campaign texts produce less than 0.3 percent. Relational organizing — activating volunteers to contact their own networks — is the highest-ROI voter contact method available. Learn more.

Deep Canvassing

Decentralized / Franchise Leadership

Relational Organizing

A single listening-first, non-scripted conversation with a voter is estimated to be 102 times more effective per contact than the average presidential persuasion program. This is about building trust, not delivering talking points. Learn more.

Decentralized / Franchise Leadership

Decentralized / Franchise Leadership

Decentralized / Franchise Leadership

Movements that empower local chapter leaders to experiment and lead — rather than execute directives from national headquarters — build more durable power. MADD, Faith & Freedom, and Obama 2008 all used this model. Top-down control trades community bonds for message consistency. Learn more.

Broad-Tent Coalition Building

Broad-Tent Coalition Building

Decentralized / Franchise Leadership

Winning in contested territory requires organizing across ideological lines around shared local concerns — schools, hospitals, wages, public safety — rather than requiring agreement on national hot-button issues. Litmus tests are, as one organizer put it, "kryptonite." Learn more.

Year-Round Community Presence

Broad-Tent Coalition Building

Year-Round Community Presence

Faith & Freedom does not show up at election time. It is embedded in churches and civic organizations every week of the year. The organizations that build lasting political power provide community, mutual support, and belonging that persists between elections.Have you opened a new location, redesigned your shop, or added a new product or service? Don't keep it to yourself, let folks know. Learn more.

Developing Local Candidates

Broad-Tent Coalition Building

Year-Round Community Presence

MAGA did not just elect Trump. It trained people to run for school board, county commission, and precinct chair and turned them out at scale. Winning at the top of the ticket requires a bench. Building that bench starts locally, years before any presidential cycle. Learn more.
