About Us

Welcome to a community space for reinventing the Democratic Party

To restore our democracy, the DemocraticParty needs to win elections. To do that, we need to build a much bigger tent which attracts the majority of Americans who want to feel secure about their future and live in just society. This is our challenge. Reinvent Blue place where we can work on this. Together. As this site launches, its content will be "pretty good." it will only get to GREAT with your participation. As that occurs, our ideas will get better and better. That will require all of us to really listen to one another, hearing perspectives that are sometimes different than ours.

Seth Bernstein

Founder and Strategic Director

I have been active in politics my entire adult life. From protests agains the Vietnam War to the Women's March in January of 2017 to the NO KINGS Marches of today, I have raised my voice, along with many others, to express my views. I have helped get out the vote in many elections and contributed financially to many liberal causes. In short, nothing all that unusual.

Donald Trump coming down that escalator to announce his first run for the White House sparked a different kind of activism. I learned how to create video ads using iMovie which I posted to Youtube. I later began creating documentaries, one of which will be premiered March 1, 2026. It is called My MAGA. You will find it on this website, along with a number of my other videos.

Following the Democrats' loss to Donald Trump in November of 2024 along with across the board losses in Congress, I felt - as did many others (including disaffected Republicans) - "there is something fundamentally wrong here." Donald Trump and his enablers were totally beatable and yet we lost. Again.

What is our problem? What can we do differently?  These are the questions that led me to the idea of creating Reinvent Blue, an online community for reinventing the Democratic Party. Let's do something together, in a public space where party professionals can mingle with every day folks who have good ideas. Let's find new solutions to our most vexing problems and search for ways to communicate our ideas effectively to the voting public.

The people who voted for Donald Trump are not stupid. (And these same people were not stupid when they voted for Obama.) MAGA is not popular. We have to take responsibility for our losses, not blame it on "stupid people' and "racists." It is us, the Democrats who have failed to innovate, failed to communicate in language that most people can relate to.

People who used to vote for Democrats feel that the party has failed them and their families. They feel that the party has been talking down to them. If we are to move forward, we need to be honest with ourselves and with them and admit, "yes, this is a fair and accurate conclusion." And then, we need to do something about it. Change.

Not our values, but our policies and our tone. We need to get off our high horses and become the party where people actually listen to one another and find ways to meet in the middle for the common good. For example, groups like the Common Ground Network for Life and Choice in the 1990s brought pro-life and pro-choice activists together to work toward shared practical goals.  Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, who had expressed personal opposition to abortion, also publicly supported codifying legal reproductive rights protections at the federal level.  During the 2024 Republican primary, Nikki Haley repeatedly tried to differentiate her stance from more absolutist views on abortion. She opposed abortion, but supported reasonable exceptions. Charlie Baker, the former GOP Governor of Massachusetts translated a similarly nuanced point of view into executive action.

This is just one example of how we find a way to listen to one another and search for common ground. That is the First Principle of Reinvent Blue. The Second Principle I steal from Steven Jobs: 'think different." The New Deal was great in its day and for many years after. But this is 2026, not 1933. The challenges we face today and expect to face tomorrow are very different. We need to invent fresh approaches that address the social and economic factors that drove Trump's populist rise or the electorate will once again turn to simplistic, fear-based, autocratic rule.

Together, let's get ahead of that. Yes, we can do that.

My VIDEOS

My MAGA

The documentary, My MAGA began as a personal effort to make sense of a phrase that seemed to mean everything and nothing at the same time. As Americans increasingly talk past one another, I wanted to step away from slogans and return to history, economics, and lived experience. Watch My MAGA on Youtube. It is a finalist at the Texas Documentary Film Festival and "selected" at two additional festivals.

Strong Enough

Strong Enough” is both a question and an answer. Are we strong enough to withstand four years of Trump and his Project 2025?  The answer is, yes, we are strong enough. My friend and fellow musician, Fred Towne went to prison for his beliefs. He was strong enough. He composed this song, which we performed at the No Kings protest in Corvallis, Oregon. You can watch it on Youtube.

One Voice

How Lies Become Truth

At a time of great division within the United States, this music video celebrates the ongoing evolution of American democracy and culture.  See this award winning music video on Youtube. The song, One Voice, was composed by Ruth Moody and performed by the Wallin'Jennys.

How Lies Become Truth

How Lies Become Truth

How Lies Become Truth

This award-winning, timely one hour documentary answers the question: how could millions of people come to believe the stolen election fallacy? The question is answered from the perspective of psychological and sociological research. This documentary is not just about Trump and the MAGA movement. It addresses the much broader question of how people in general come to believe lies told to them by charismatic leaders. Watch on Youtube.

Blinders

How Lies Become Truth

Two Pricks

This music video uses Flames Of Love by Lynn Miles to tell the story of ordinary people falling in love with charismatic leaders, many of whom encourage their followers to act out their passion violently.  At the Jan 6 Commission hearings Stephen Ayers warned his fellow travelers to "take the blinders off."  He wasn't saying, 'pick a side,' he was saying, 'open your eyes, see yourself, and the consequences of your actions.' That is what I am after: holding up a mirror. Watch on Youtube.

Two Pricks

How Lies Become Truth

Two Pricks

These two destructive and manipulative men are made for one another. The populations of their respective countries are faced with the same question. What will they do about it? What will you do about it? Watch on Youtube.
